STEAM LAB

Our STEAM curriculum is based on the idea of educating students in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach these disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, PS 376 integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.  The STEAM Lab engages students utilizing STEAM Mobile Solution, K’Nex education, coding robots, drones, MINECRAFT education, animal handling, and hands-on investigations. By implementing the NYC Science Scope and Sequence through the lens of STEAM, students are better prepared for their future.  Through STEAM education, students receive a strong foundation for 21st-century literacy and careers.

ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN LAB

The Environmental Design Lab is a workspace dedicated to observing, exploring and discovering features of our natural and built world. Students from grades K – 5 are exposed to environmental themes of sustainability, urban gardening, wildlife preservation, renewable energy, and conservation of natural resources. Students engage in interdisciplinary STEAM projects in which they design solutions to issues concerning the environment in the 21st century by investigating phenomena, building models, testing prototypes, and using technology to create presentations and public awareness campaigns. A number of grant programs are  implemented each school year to give students exposure to experts in the field, learn about current environmental concerns and issues, and find out how we can all have a positive impact on our own community.

MEDIA ARTS

The Media Arts Studio is a workspace dedicated to developing students in the visual arts. Making art stimulates thoughtful inquiry and sharpens perception.  Students from grades K – 5 are exposed to a variety of different media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, and digital media. They will explore the process of using different media such as charcoal, paint, ink, glue, and clay. Students work on interdisciplinary STEAM projects in which they apply the elements and principals of art to create designs for technology.

DANCE

In the dance studio, students observe, explore, replicate, and create body movement and dances. They engage in activities to build their technical and expressive skills, develop their artistry, and communicate a unique personal voice, through the power of dance. Building on these experiences they develop a dance language and apply it to analyze, evaluate, document, and perform their own dances. Students also investigate the historical, social and cultural contents of dance by exploring themes and principles connected to other disciplines. The goal is to gain an understanding of the significance of dance as an evolution of human thought, expression, artistry, and creativity.

COMPUTER SCIENCE

In the Computer Science Lab, students explore computer science while developing their computational thinking skills. Students work on transdisciplinary STEAM projects in which they design, create, produce and test digital and mechanical technology using: NXT Mindstorms, WeDo Lego Robotics, Ozobot Robotics, NAO Robots with Choregraphe software, Code.org, Scratch (MIT), 3-D Drawing & 3-D Printing, SketchUp, and TinkerCad.

PHOTOGRAPHY & JOURNALISM

In Photography & Journalism, students prepare for the 21st-century, by utilizing the modes of writing through an array of computer-based programs. The content is driven by the Social Studies and Science Scope and Sequence curricula. With Project-Based Learning and STEAM always at the forefront, students create electronic presentations showcasing the subject matter being researched.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The physical education program at PS 376 complies with the NYS Learning Standards and the 5 components of physical fitness, including body composition, flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and aerobic fitness. Physical Education is a component of the total education program which contributes to the direct development of each student through the natural medium of human movement in physical activity. The program is a carefully planned sequence of learning experiences that are designed to promote the growth, development, and behavioral needs of each student through participation in purposeful and enjoyable activities. This includes the use of sports equipment as well as technology.
